Information about the historical PANHALA FORT.

The huge fort Panhala is only 20 km away from Kolhapur the Karvir city. Even at present, lots of people reside on the fort. Many historical memories and events are carved on the heart of this fort.

Historical Importance.

The residence of Parashar Rushi has made this land sacred. It is said that Bhoj Raja from Shilahar dynasty established it.

After killing Afjalkhan, Shivaji Maharaj marched on Adilshahi and only in 18 days he captured Panhala. In the light of torches, Shivaji Maharaj viewed Panhala. Shocked by losing Panhala, Adilshah  sent his commander Siddi Johar with huge army and Shivaji Maharaj got besieged on Panhala. British also came for the help of Siddi Johar with their cannons. The situation was critical but Shivaji Maharaj rescued himself from Adilshah using his intelligence. At one rainy night, he fled straight to Vishalgad with his selected companions, but in this brave attempt, BAJIPRABHU DESHPANDE and SHIVA KASHID lost their lives.

SHIVAJI MAHARAJ gave Panhala to Adilshah but it was his strong wish to bring it back to Swaraj. After Purandhar's treaty, Shivaji failed to capture Panhala along with Mughal army. Further he handed this task to brave KONDAJI PHARJAND . He took with him only sixty soldiers, but he made lot of noise with various instruments and made enemy feel as if he had a large army with him. Misguided enemy could not resist much and only sixty soldiers showed an excellent demonstration of "Ganimi Kava" and won Panhala.

When Shivaji Maharaj came to the captured fort of Panhala, he was welcomed by mavlas by showering golden flowers on him.

Today on the fort, there are prominent statues of BAJIPRABHU DESHPANDE and SHIVA KASHID. The huge grain storages Ganga, Sindhu, Saraswati, Teen Darwaja, Rajdindi Darwaja, Sajjakothi, monuments of Ramchandrapant Amatya and poet Moropant, Cave of Parashar Muni and many more points are worth seeing. Many young followers of Shivaji Maharaj travel from Panhala to Vishalgad in rain, to refresh the memories of the battle of PAWANKHIND.
