When Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to look at some mountain with some purpose, the fortune of that mountain used to change. The excellent example is PRATAPGAD. 

More's had a strong hold on Javli region full of dense forests, hills and valleys. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj suddenly attacked Javli hand bone this region to bring it in Swaraj. At that time, the attention of Shivaji Maharaj was drawn by a mountain situated at the West of Mahabaleshwer. It was covered with the the thick forests. It was Bhorpya's mountain. Shivaji Maharaj visualized a fort built there, that would be a Giridurag as well as a Vaadurga surrounded by dense forests. Then Moropant Pingle built a strong fort there. That is none other than PRATAPGAD. 


 

HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE

Afjalkhan's attack was a great disaster on Swaraj. He was a cruel and merciless commander of Adilshaha. He invaded the Shivshahi and wanted to destroy it with his huge army. At that time, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had a big question before him as to how to deal with him. PRATAPGAD was thoughtfully finalized as a battlefield by him. As Afjalkhan entered in Wai, Shivaji Maharaj tactfully made him come to Javli with all his army. 

Finally, the historical meet of Afjalkhan and Shivaji Maharaj took place on 10th Nov 1659.Shivaji Maharaj showed both intellect and bravery and KILLED Afjalkhan. He defeated Afjalkhan's unalert soldiers in the valley of Javli. Shivaji Maharaj fame spread everywhere. In history, name of Pratapgad became immortal. Further Shivaji Maharaj consecrated a deity Ashtabhuja bhavani here. For that he brought the idol made out of the stone found in Gandaki river in Nepal. 



Today, at the foot of t     ridingMaharaj  fMaharaj ort, there is Ramvardayani temple. On the way to the fort, there is Afjalkhan's Mausoleum. If we pass the tehlani buruj (watch tower) , we come across a Sadar and Kedareshwer temple. A statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj riding a horse is situated on the fort, which was inaugurated by the Indian's first Prime Minister Pandit Javaharlal Nehru. 

   PRATAPGAD is like a poet, describing the bravery and greatness of CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ.
